A couple seeks a sense of community in the suburbs of the 1970s.
Affluent 1970s couple Susan and Bruce Miller move their family to a Chicago suburb, anticipating an idyllic new life of backyard barbecues and kids playing on nearby gym sets. As soon as they meet new neighbors Tom and Trina Decker, however, the Millers realize the kids aren't the ones doing the swinging, and it's all too appropriate that the floors are covered with, yes, shag carpeting. As for Janet and Roger Thompson, the Millers' former neighbors, she's shocked -- shocked! -- by what she witnesses when she visits Susan, but Roger may be a little more titillated by all this rampant sexual freedom than his wife realizes. It's a soapy time capsule of an era marked by open marriage and women's liberation, where "swap meet" takes on a whole new meaning.
