Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. returns to host another journey into the African-Amerian experience by delving into the personal histories of a new group of participants: poet Maya Angelou, author Bliss Broyard, actor Don Cheadle, actor Morgan Freeman, theologian Peter Gomes, publisher Linda Johnson Rice, athlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee, radio personality Tom Joyner, actor-comic Chris Rock, rock star Tina Turner and college administrator Kathleen Henderson.
