'Fringe': Last brain to Clarksburg
Let's just call this episode of Fringe what it was: "The John Noble Hour!" And folks, that's a mighty fine way to spend an hour, let me tell you. This week's episode didn't balance the personal and mythological as well as last week's entry in the series, but the personal side was so damn good that I really couldn't care less. Am I interested in the Pattern? Absolutely. But if the show wants to spend a few weeks making us care more about those investigating it, you'll scant hear a complaint from me. Continue Reading

"Fringe": Getting to the heart of things
Chalk it up to Lucky Number Seven. Tonight, after a lengthy hiatus, we all got the first truly great episode of Fringe. It's been fits and starts up until now as the show struggled to find its feet...its voice...its pattern (pun intended). But this edition provided some insight as to where the show could actually go, wisely tying this week's mystery into both the larger mythology of Fringe and the personal lives of its central characters. 'Fringe': Wave of radiation
Tonight's episode of Fringe was not for the squeamish. It's not as if the show hasn't ratcheted up the gore in episodes past, but the show's prop master sure had to bust out bucket after bucket of fake blood this time round. But the gore was in service of what might have been the most intriguing mystery of the week so far. While convoluted, it nevertheless presented a scenario that seems somewhat plausible in the near future of our own reality. Continue Reading

'Fringe': Boogie oogie oogie...
Give Fringe this: it's not often that the work of REO Speedwagon becomes a central part of the plot. Sure, we've all seen shows in which Toto points the way to the truth, or Air Supply saves the day, but it took the mind of J.J. Abrams to put REO Speedwagon into this rather limp episode in which The Pattern showed remarkable little sizzle. A show that could have been charged with excitement instead blew a fuse almost instantly. (And yes, fret not: I'm done punning. Iâll be sure to conduct myself more professionally from here on in.) 'Fringe': Bad vibrations
I know that Fringe isn't a comedy, but how many of you laughed out loud when Agent Broyles referred to a potential key to unlocking The Pattern as "The Observer?" I could hear the studio executives at CBS and TNT scrambling to put together a pilot based on that name alone. ("Sarah Michelle Gellar IS The Observer!") Sadly, this wasn't even the silliest thing about this week's episode, which simultaneously provided the richest mythology and yet dumbest "Pattern of the Week" yet. Continue Reading
