Hondo Lane, a former Confederate Cavalry captain, travels the Arizona Territory of the 1870s as a scout. He is something of a surly loner - he saw his Indian wife killed by army soldiers during a massacre - and he devotes most of his energy toward trying to stem as much bloodshed as he can. Only Angie Dow and her little boy, Johnny, see a softer side to Hondo. Captain Richards is the by-the-book fort commander, Buffalo Baker Hondo's fellow scout and Chief Vittoro the father of Hondo's late wife.
