Laura's absence gives Paul an opportunity to connect with Rosie and Ian.
Middle-aged psychologist Paul Weston begins to confront some uneasy truths about his relationship with his own wife, Kate, while conducting a series of therapy sessions with his patients: Laura, a beautiful anesthesiologist whose infatuation with Paul threatens her relationship with her boyfriend; Alex, a Navy pilot suppressing guilt feelings after botched military intelligence leads him to bomb an Iraqi school by mistake; Sophie, a 16-year-old aspiring Olympic gymnast with confused feelings about the adults in her life; and Jake and Amy, a couple whose marriage is held together these days by little more than a still-intense sexual attraction. To help him deal with both his patients and his family problems, Paul turns once again to Dr. Gina Toll, who was once his supervisor. Now retired, Gina agrees to meet every Friday with Paul, but old conflicts between the two keep resurfacing during their sessions. Each half-hour episode shows a session between Paul and one of his patients or Gina, with each meeting taking place on the same weekday throughout the show's nine-week run.
