This sleek dramedy revolves around a Manhattan trio of alpha females who forge tight friendships while trying to balance their personal and professional lives. Fashion magazine editor Nico has her eye on her boss's job as the company CEO while feeling guilty about her affair with younger photographer Kirby; movie executive Wendy feels conflicted that her job prevents quality family time; and Victory is struggling to get her career as a fashion designer back on track while looking for a new boyfriend after her fling with a New York tycoon craters.
Lipstick Jungle has been straddling the cancellation line for a few months now, teasing both fans and detractors alike with its uncertain future. Tonight it says what looks to be a final goodbye, and for those of us who have stuck with the show from the beginning I can attest: it will be missed.
Lipstick Jungle finally put Victory and Joe fans out of their misery tonight (after teasing us all episode with the possibility of a breakup) with a sweet declaration of love and an engagement to boot. But wait...did they really? Call me a stickler for detail, but Joe never actually say yes.
Lipstick Jungle has been on quite the roller coaster ride for the last month, being canceled and then revived, and subsequently shuffled to two different time slots in four weeks. Despite these trials, however, the show has been creatively triumphant and, according to the NBC promo department, will be back in the new year with new episodes for us to enjoy. Merry Christmas, Lipstick Jungle fans!
Lipstick Jungle has always been successful when examining the complicated balancing act required to be a powerful woman of a certain age who has the desire to not only be fulfilled at work but in her personal life as well. This week both Nico and Wendy face different aspects of this challenge head on, with emotionally resonant results.
Watching Lipstick Jungle knowing it's just been canceled is akin to trying to save the Titanic from sinking using only a bucket: you know your actions are futile, but for some reason you simply can't help yourself from picking up that bucket (or remote, if you will) and fighting for however much time you have left.
Put away your wire hangers, Nico, because Lipstick Jungle introduced Kirby's mother tonight and guess what? She's just not that into you.
