When New York homicide detective John Amsterdam says he brings a lifetime of experience to his work, he's not kidding. Amsterdam is immortal -- a former Dutch soldier in the 17th century colony of New Amsterdam who was granted eternal life after saving an Indian girl from a massacre. The spell she wove in gratitude will be broken only when he finds his true love. Dr. Sara Dillane is the physician who treats Amsterdam when he suffers what appears to be a massive heart attack.
We reach then end of this abbreviated season of New Amsterdam with plenty of questions, not many answers, and (at least on my part) a burning desire to know more. Here's hoping we'll see more next season.
Well that was underwhelming. New Amsterdam visits the recent past as John investigates the impending death of his former partner, who may be one of the most two-dimensional, uninspired cops on TV this year.
Now here's the episode of New Amsterdam I've been waiting for: John's sins of the past seem to be inextricably linked to the crime of the present, making me want to know more about both plotlines.
New Amsterdam has a lot going for it -- compelling characters, an intriguing backstory that gives the writers endless possible plotlines to play with, some good actors (and others I can ignore), and lots of potential for olden-days in-jokes that makes history geeks like me all tingly.
You know what probably sucks the most about living forever? Seeing the same horrible things happen over and over again. We get that on New Amsterdam this week, as a brutal rape case reminds our immortal hero of the evil that men do.
After getting a double-barreled promotional push behind American Idol last week, New Amsterdam settled nicely into its regular time slot tonight with an installment that asked: what will John Amsterdam do once the path to his newly found "one" becomes a bit bumpy?
