Evolutionary zoologist Nick Cutter makes a startling discovery: Strange, unexplained ``anomalies'' have ripped multiple holes in the fabric of time and space, allowing dangerous (and dangerously hungry) creatures from the distant past to lumber onto the streets of modern Britain. As Nick and his team -- research assistant Stephen Hart, zoologist Abby Maitland and student paleontologist Connor Temple -- investigate further, Nick gets an even bigger shock, when he stumbles upon evidence suggesting that his wife, Helen, who disappeared eight years ago, has been traveling in time herself.
