Premise of 'Project Runway'
Season three of Bravo's runaway reality hit included such offbeat challenges as asking the designers to create an outfit made completely out of materials found in their apartments and constructing a garment made only from materials found at a waste management recycling facility. Among the noteworthy competitors in season three were Jeffrey Sebelia, a trash-talking recovering addict with an enormous neck tattoo bearing the name of his son; tart but elegant Laura Bennett; mellow space cadet Bradley Baumkirchner; handsome Barbie costume designer Robert Best, who rankled some fans by expressing dismay over being asked to design an outfit for an overweight woman in one challenge; pageant gown specialist Kayne Gillaspie; retired designer Vincent Libretti, who constantly astonished himiself (but no one else) by his own genius; Uli Herzner, a sunny free spirit from Miami Beach; and Michael Knight, a viewer favorite from Atlanta who had been rejected for season two of the show. Designer Keith Michael earned the dubious distinction of being the first contestant kicked off the show for violating "Runway" rules involving possessing fashion how-to books, leaving the set without permission and using the Internet. In the hotly contested finale, Sebelia, this season's controversial villain, prevailed over endearing first runner-up Herzner, with Bennett and Knight coming in third and fourth, respectively.
