Gruff space shuttle veteran ``Bull'' Eckert runs the astronaut training program at Kennedy Space Center, working alongside Jack Riles, a testy Air Force officer who has piloted several shuttle missions; Reggie Warren, an intimidating ex-Marine; and Tamara St. James, the mission specialist. Their trainee charges are Zeke, an Air Force veteran of the first Gulf War; Barbara, an old flame of Reggie; D.B., a brilliant astrophysicist whose father also had been an astronaut; and Peter, an elementary school teacher who is insecure about his lack of military training.
