Premise of 'The X-Files'
David Duchovny ("Twin Peaks," "Return to Me") and Gillian Anderson ("Playing by Heart," "The Turning") star as two FBI special agents who investigate unexplained cases called "X-Files." Though the government is convinced that the outlandish reports are false, the two agents will stop at nothing to prove that "the truth is out there." Duchovny played Fox Mulder, an Oxford-educated psychologist who believed that his younger sister had been abducted by aliens years earlier. Anderson played Dana Scully, a no-nonsense medical school graduate who took a more scientific, skeptical approach to the X-File cases. Mulder and Scully's boss, Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), himself a skeptic, later realized the depth of the U.S. Government's secrets -- the ones Mulder had been trying to convince him of all along. One of Mulder and Scully's main nemeses was the Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis), a mysterious figure tied to the goverment and their alien-related activities. In the final season, Scully was forced to work without a missing Mulder (whom she was working tirelessly to find) and instead found herself in the company of Agents John Doggett (Robert Patrick) and Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish). The final episode -- as with most episodes during the show's 9-year run -- didn't exactly tie up all the "loose ends." And that's just the way the fans like it.
