San Francisco phone company employee Sydney Bloom spends her spare time playing the latest virtual reality game. During one of these sessions, she is shocked when she stumbles into the fabled ``fifth level'' of virtual reality, a surrealistic fantasy world that uncannily has a ripple effect into the real world. Among those seeking to use this power to their own end are computer science professor Frank Morgan, whom Sydney befriends.
